When to Book Maternity Photos: A Week-by-Week Guide

Start planning before choosing a date
Maternity portraits bring timing, comfort, wardrobe, and studio availability into the same conversation. Reach out while you are planning this chapter, rather than waiting for every detail to feel settled. You can begin with an approximate window and a few photographs you love.
Tell us who you would like included and any dates that are difficult for your family. That gives the studio a practical way to discuss available appointments and the preparation you want to make beforehand.
The 28 to 34 week window
Many sessions take place between 28 and 34 weeks, the planning range described in our maternity preparation guide. It is a useful conversation starter, not a requirement or a medical recommendation. People feel different at different stages, and the right plan depends on your circumstances.
If you are considering an earlier or later appointment, tell the studio how you are feeling and the portraits you imagine. We can discuss the posing, comfort needs, and available dates together. Follow your own care team’s advice about activity, travel, and any restrictions.
Earlier in the planning process
Use the earlier planning weeks to gather references and discuss the people who will join you. Save colors, shapes, gowns, and expressions that feel right. Confirm the studio location and talk about any personal clothing or meaningful details you want to include.
Booking begins with a conversation about availability and the reservation details. An inquiry itself does not secure a date. Your studio will explain the next step and confirm the arrangements for your appointment.
As the session approaches
Confirm the wardrobe plan, including undergarments and any coverage you prefer. If you choose professional hair and makeup, arrange it with time to finish and travel comfortably to the studio. Check services and timing with your chosen provider.
Keep the studio informed if your needs or circumstances change. For twins, a high-risk pregnancy, or any health concerns, ask your care team about an appropriate plan and share any relevant accommodations with the studio. We do not set a separate medical timetable for photographs.
If you are already later in pregnancy
You can still get in touch and ask about available dates. Tell us what you hope to create and what would make the visit comfortable. There is no need to assume an appointment is possible or impossible without that conversation.
Explore maternity portraits, read about the studio experience, and use preparation to plan a confirmed session. Your appointment details and comfort should guide the final arrangements.
