The Studio Maternity Experience: Gowns, Light, and What to Expect

Begin with the portrait you imagine

A maternity portrait can feel sculptural, quiet, flowing, or close and personal. Save a few photographs you love and think about what attracts you to each one. Color, movement, an expression, or the connection between two people gives the studio a useful starting point.

You do not need every detail decided before reaching out. Tell us the timing you have in mind, whether anyone will join you, and any comfort considerations you want us to understand. We will discuss the plan together.

Talk through gowns and styling

Our studio has a collection of maternity gowns you are welcome to discuss for your session. Bring your own ideas and any personal pieces you would like to include. Confirm the wardrobe plan with the studio before deciding what to pack.

Consider undergarments that work with your chosen clothing and any coverage you prefer. Some fabrics can be sheer. Sharing your comfort preferences gives us a clearer plan for styling and posing. Hair and makeup arrangements should be confirmed separately with the artist or salon you choose.

Light and direction around you

Studio lighting lets us consider the shape of the gown, the background, and the feeling of the photograph together. We guide positioning and expression during the session. Let us know how you are feeling so the plan can stay responsive to your comfort.

If you would like your partner or children included, mention that while planning. A quiet portrait together may feel different from an individual portrait with flowing fabric. Discussing both ideas helps us plan the groupings and clothing.

Plan timing as a conversation

Many maternity sessions take place between 28 and 34 weeks, as described in our preparation guide. Your comfort, circumstances, and available dates also matter. Reach out while you are considering the session so there is time to talk through those details.

For twins, a high-risk pregnancy, or any medical or activity restrictions, follow the advice of your own care team. Tell the studio what accommodations you need. Photography timing should support that advice and how you feel, rather than replace it.

From portrait to artwork

Bring room photographs or approximate wall dimensions if you already imagine artwork at home. At your in-person projected reveal, we discuss your favorite portraits and how they could become a wall piece, a collection, an album, or smaller prints.

Artwork is selected and purchased separately from the session. Explore maternity portraits, read investment, and use the preparation guide when planning the details of your confirmed visit.
